"Das Fenster" is America's oldest and most popular German language magazine providing a wide variety of interesting reading. Regular monthly features include Our Health, Joys of Gardening , Science and Technology and a Culture section. German crossword puzzles are also a popular feature as well as a humor section and the children's page, "Hallo Kinder"! Travel articles and short stories appear on a regular basis.
"Das Fenster" actually started in Milwaukee WI in September 1904 as "Die Deutsche Hausfrau" and catered to the large population of Germans in America. The annual subscription cost was 25 cents! Ads in that first issue include purses for $1.05, books and novels for 45 cents and a comb and brush set for 95 cents! My, how times have changed!
"Das Fenster" is published entirely in the German language and the staff are proud of the role they play in providing a valuable resource to the German community in America. Not only do we showcase interesting reading material in the German language but through our advertisers and reader forums we provide this German-American community with access to quality German goods and services that are sometimes hard to find in different parts of the country.
Come join the party! The September 2003 issue marked the start of our 100th year anniversary celebration! Along with our great regular installments, every month we will feature articles and pictures from magazines of 100 years ago!
